Entry Types
Entries can be in one of two forms: Business or Personal. Business entries are allowed to display signage of the sponsoring business on the sides of the vehicles. Signage must not interfere with Freedom Road Rally signage. Business entries are permitted to display flyers at their vehicle or promote their sponsor during the events activities. There is a $300 additional charge for business entries. Personal entries must be funded by individuals and are not permitted to have additional signage present on their vehicles unless approved by the event coordinators.
Vehicles
Any pre-1974 vehicle including sedans, convertibles, sports cars, race cars, motorcycles, or any motor vehicle that could have been seen on the roads pre-1974. Vehicles may be modified, however all modifications should be period correct and listed on the Entry Form. These modifications should be made in the interest of drivability, reliability, safety, and the historical preservation of the vehicle. These modifications should still allow the vehicles to appear “period correct” and should be hidden whenever possible. All entrants with modified vehicles must list modifications on entry form. Vehicles of historical significance or one-off, custom vehicles that are considered to be within the “spirit of the event” may be accepted for entry on an individual basis. All entries must be in excellent road-worthy condition and present a positive appearance. Aftermarket equipment may be used as long as it is “period correct” or used in the interest of drivability and safety. Vehicles must be able to maintain speeds of 50-55 mph for extended periods of time.
Required Equipment
Vehicles should have seats and lap belts (if originally equipped) for all occupants. Vehicles must have electric rear taillights, electric rear brake lights, electric front and rear turn signals, and electric headlights suitable for nighttime driving. All windshields, and where applicable, side windows should be made of safety glass. Vehicles must be legally operational on all public roads and highways in their registered state/province. It is advisable that vehicles contain one operational fire extinguisher, first aid kit, and emergency flares/reflectors.
Additional Vehicle Modification Information
Body Modifications
Plastic and fiberglass replica bodies and components should be approved by the event coordinator. Pre-1974 vehicles can be re-bodied in an effort to recreate pre-1974 custom, one-off, racer, limited production, or rare vehicles. Vehicles should be constructed with the materials and procedures true to their era (i.e. no billet aluminum). Any damaged area of the body can be replaced with an identical design/material. The entrant should document modifications in the Entry Form. A picture and specifications of all changed aspects of the vehicle may be sent to the event management. Individuals are welcome to seek clarification on any of these regulations from the event management.
Engine/Chassis Modifications
Engines should be “period correct” for the vehicles and preferably true to the original manufacturer. All internal engine modifications and repairs are unrestricted. External modifications should be period correct. Any pre-1974 carburetor or fuel injection may be used. Transmissions and rear ends should be original or period correct on the exterior. Add-on overdrive units are allowed as are the modifications that they may entail. Vehicles must be able to have a fuel range of 100 miles. If fuel capacity needs to be increased, auxiliary tanks can be added as long as they meet Federal and State/Provincial requirements, don’t detract from the appearance of the vehicle, are properly vented, are not in the passenger compartment, or outside of the vehicle (on bumpers, running boards, etc.). Spare gas containers are not permitted in vehicles. Wheel sizes and styles should be original or period correct. Tires should be in good condition and should have the appearance of what originally came equipped on the vehicle. All modifications should be approved by the event coordinators. Please feel free to contact the event coordinators with any questions or clarifications.
Event Instructions
Participants will be provided with a packet of event instructions each morning at the drivers meeting that will cover the day’s route, activities, times, maps, etc. Saturday before the event there will be a mandatory orientation for all participants that will cover a variety of aspects of the event. Daily instructions are in a list form with distances following each instruction. The instructions will also indicate locations for lunch stops and pit stops as well as times allocated for each. Lunch stops are usually 1 hour long with pit stops ranging from 15-30 minutes in length. Participants will be driving an average of 4.5 hours each day with the three stops throughout this drive. The evening activities will be planned and highlighted in the day’s instructions. These will vary from museums to celebrations with the local cars to group dinners, etc. These activities must be attended by participants unless special permission has been given by the Event Coordinators. Maps will also be provided to the participants during the event; however the instructions must be followed at all times. Participants are required to follow all aspects of the daily instructions, especially the route and evening activities. Failure to do so is grounds for dismissal from the event. There will be a sweep vehicle that will follow behind the event and will follow the given route as well.
Technical Inspection
All entry vehicles will go through a brief inspection by the Freedom Road Rally staff before the beginning of the race. Vehicles will be tested for working lights, brakes, and safe operation.
Insurance
All entrant and support vehicles must be covered by at least the minimum amount of liability insurance in their registered state/province. A certificate of insurance or declaration page showing entry vehicles, coverage dates, and limits of liability must be submitted with the final entry installment. All entrants must show proof that their vehicles are licensed, insured, and legal on all public roads. Entrants must also show that they are the owner of the entered vehicles or that they have permissions from the owner to be used in the Freedom Road Rally.
Important:
Any entry/support vehicle involved in an incident or accident during the event must provide written details of the accident, including witnesses, to the event management as soon as possible.
