Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My car is not 100% original or not pre-1974. Does it qualify?
A: Most cars that are not 100% original qualify as a “in the spirit of the event.” Many manufactured after 1974 do too. Just ask us and we’ll let you know!
Q: What is the itinerary?
A: Our goal is to recreate the adventure of the classic American road trip. In this spirit, we don’t reveal every detail of the tour. Our participants enjoy the possibility of a surprise around the next corner. Itinerary highlights are described on the Current Event page of the website. Members of the rally staff travel to the destination months ahead of time to preview attractions, find private collections, check out the routes, and set up behind the scenes tours and special events. The end result is a well organized tour that features the very best an area has to offer. This is part of the reason that so many of our participants return year after year with confidence.
Q: How many cars go on each tour?
A: 50 to 75. Our groups are large enough to make an exciting event, but small enough to get to know people.
Q: Is this a hub tour?
A: No. While hub tours are much easier to plan and organize, they don’t offer a big enough sense of road trip adventure. Since 2005, all Freedom Road tours have been laid out in a loop, finishing in the same place they started. This enables folks who trailer their cars to the event to leave their tow rigs parked for the week while they go have fun in their classic car. Occasionally, when we arrive in an area that has a lot to see, we will spend an entire day, booking two nights in the same hotel.
Q: What hotels will we stay in?
A: We typically stay in 3 and 4 star hotels. All hotels are inspected by members of our staff, to be sure they meet our stringent quality requirements, before being booked as a night stop on the tour. Hotel chains that we use most frequently include Fairfield Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and Hampton Inn.
Q: My wife isn’t sure about this trip. Is this just one big car show?
A. Not at all! The trip offers something for everyone. Yes, there are car related activities. There are also house and garden tours, shopping, nice hotels and restaurants, and other like minded people to talk to.
Q: You say you provide tow vehicle and trailer parking for the week. We won’t be traveling with a bunch of ‘trailer queens’ will we?
A: No. Our participants are terrific people who love driving their old cars. Many people travel thousands of miles every year to participate wherever we hold the events. For convenience, and due to time constraints, some of them trailer to the start/end point. Other participants drive their car to the event no matter how far it is.
Q: What happens if my car breaks down during the event?
A: A tow rig follows the tour, and you will also have cell phone numbers for staff members who can be called for assistance. If your car can’t be fixed on the spot, it will be loaded on the trailer, and you’ll continue on. Rally
